View Full Version : the mystery leak

I've had my michelin diamaris tires on my rover since may of 2007, they have been all I could ask for as far as a street tire is concerned. However, 1 of my tires has been leaking air myseriously for over a year now. There have been no plugs or patches ever used on that tire. I've had the valve stems replaced twice now. I've had the tire taken off the rim and reset. I've sprayed the whole damn thing with soap and water...no bubbles. I've literally done everything I could besides replace the rim and tire. Brent has even worked on the tire when he was at LR last year lol.

I fill the tires up to the proper PSI and the tire will always drop down to 20psi. sometimes it takes less than 24 hours, sometimes it can take 3 weeks. but its the only tire that loses pressure so drastically. I've had to fill it up twice in the past 2 days, and since I don't have my own compressor like I do back home, it annoys me.

My only thoughts could be is that there is a pin hole in either the tire or possibly even a rim (there have been such things as porous rims before). But I'm not exactly sure what to do, the tire costs $250 new, and I don't want to shell out that cash for a goddamn street tire. Nor do I want to put my goodyear wrangler spare on (cuz its a total piece of shit)...

Pump up the pressure and then spray it with soapy water.

lol i've been dealing with this issue for over a year now, i've had to "man up" this whole time. i don't mind filling up the tire once a week for air, thats not an issue. If it continues to be an everyday scenario then I'm gonna need to put my spare on for driving until I figure it out.

i just went back outside, i lost 16 psi in just over 3 hours. rediculous. I'm going to a shop tomorrow to try and figure this out, if we can't find a leak then we'll switch the rim from my spare (in case its the rim) and just order a new tire (in case its the tire)...that way we've covered all bases.

find a pool.. inflate said tire a bit more than it needs. Bring said wheel/tire in, and find out where bubbles are coming from.

little update:

basically I got screwed over by land rover of fort myers last december when I paid them to take the tire off the rim, check for damage, balance and rotate all tires. It turns out they never rotated my tire, so a tire which i thought had no patches or plugs was in fact my previously damaged tire.

I got a screw in it last august, guy tried to patch it, ended up grinding down the inside of the tire to the steel, then decided he couldn't and he plugged it. All he told me was "the patch wouldn't adhere, so i plugged it".

Tire was beyond repair as the air this douchebag decided to grind really close to the sidewall.

Total bill: fucking $322.00 for a brand new mounted/balanced michelin diamaris 4x4 tire. Tire retail price = $249. I have a road hazard coverage and this should actually fit under the policy. so once I send in the info i'll only pay a $40 deductible. so its no big deal, just this month's credit card bill is gonna be scarier than I had hoped.

Lesson learned: Land Rover of Fort Myers is Incompetent beyond belief (nothing new there), Tiger Tires or W/e that did my "repair" before doesn't know how to patch a tire safely, I need to pay more attention/watch all service done by other people on my vehicle.

now it looks all goofy until i pick up the tire/rim tomorrow...i'm driving on my damned spare goodyear

this is why i do not trust anybody to touch my car. the littlest problems get fucked up so bad and ends up costing you money because of other peoples stupidity.

i thought ordering a damn tire was a simple task. match ALLLLLL the goddamn numbers and letters on the side and you'll have a winner. well apparently these guys ordered the proper size 255/55/18 but not the proper speed rating/extra load capacity, and they can't get the speed/weight rating to match the other tires because their fucking distributor doesn't carry that specific size. So my new tire, matches in tread pattern and size, however its sidewall looks a bit different and its capacity is only 2059lbs instead of 2259lbs. rediculous.

whats the performance rating of your old compared to your new? If they've taken you from a V or W,Z,or Y rated tire to an H I would recommend you'd return that. Its not so much that the "speed Rating" will affect it much because you probably don't drive 156 mph. But the V or W,Z,or Y rated tires are designed specifically to handle a certain way and are tested on different scenario tracks. Just my .02

I know the speed rating doesn't mean jack for my car. The sidewall is only a tad beefier on the V rated tires. These people at this tire place can't get the V rated tire, nor do I wamt to deal with them. This tire will do for now (I'm not happy I have to settle for less), but I also don't plan on keeping these wheels and tires for over a year. I will trade for some nitto 18" tires or get 16" rims and tires. This lesser rated tire is the right size and will hold the vehicle's weight, it isn't a "problem" other than it doesn't match. i'm not happy, but I can't do anything about it at this point
